There’s a song we learn in school from a young age, and it begins with “I’m proud to be Peruvian and I’m happy.” It perfectly summarizes my feelings.
Every country is great, of course, but as a Peruvian, I’ll tell you what makes my country great:
Its people. We are friendly, kind, hardworking, and cheerful. We are ingenious, collaborative, and creative.
Its colors. We have them for all tastes: blue with the Pacific Ocean that bathes our entire coast, and our incredible lakes, like Lake Titicaca. Green, with our vast Amazon that covers approximately 60% of my country. Yellow, with its deserts, some cheating a bit with a touch of blue in their oases. Gray, with all the stone constructions that our ancestors made in the highlands, like the incredible Machu Picchu. Brown, with the ancestral constructions made on the coast and in the jungle. Multicolor, in the traditional clothing that each region has.
Its history. Almost infinite. Just focusing on the pre-Hispanic era, starting from the Sacred City of Caral (4th to 2nd century BC – 5000 years ago!) and culminating with the imposing Machu Picchu (15th-16th century).
Its flavor. With its dances full of music and rhythm. And what to say about the gastronomy. Few countries are privileged to have a cuisine so present in society. Everything that is eaten today in award-winning Peruvian restaurants is, in essence, known to all Peruvians since we started eating 😊.
I love my country, and if fate hadn’t invited me to live in France, I would undoubtedly continue living in my wonderland.
